Appears to be an interesting medicine painting intending to increase abundance of food supplies by entering that message into the subconscious of the beholder. School of fish in lower abdomen an interesting touch. What might be the significance of the item around the merman's ? neck?

This painting is in honour of "Nepii-Naba, the merman, who brought good luck to those who offered him tobacco and, in return, helped the Indians to travel safely on the lakes and rivers"

Note: Quoatation of Norval Morrisseau from the book "Legends Of My People The Great ojibway" /The Ryerson Press, 1965/

Soon I will introduce section "Understanding Anisnaabe art" where I will describe meaning of the elements used in Woodland school of art...

Thank you everyone for ecouragement to continue with a Blog.

TO CHRISTIAN:
We haven't heard from you for a while. You have your father's spirit. How about some more interpretive input? I look forward to reading your posts.

Spirit Walker,

No disrespect but...

What are your qualifications for explaining the symbols etc?

Were you an apprentice?

When did you sit at the masters feet?

I am sure your intentions are good,

but many would like to think they can carry on for the master. Few actually can.

Some people think just because they are collectors and have a big collection of Morrisseau's it makes them think by default that they know everything about the artist because they have a big collection. Those people are dellusional. The opposite of this is true. They suffer from an inferiority complex of an intellectual nature. After a while they usually figure it out for themselves when they see they can't answer specific questions by others that know more...w

To "Anonymous" asking about my qualifications to explain symbols of Anisnaabe art etc.:

Please wait and I will start explaining meanings of the symbology in Anishnaabe art. Also, you do not need to be an apprentice to understand spiritual power of Norval Morrisseau paintings and you do not need to sit at Master's feet because Norval Morrisseau said himself that "We are all One in Spirit"... and you can feel his art if you allow spirit to flow through you...

I am accepting your comments that they come from you with good intentions - the only way to spread true Spirit of Norval Morrisseau and his art.
