Just to clarify - the "Spirit of Shamanism" is an inclusive energy. I certainly don't mean to imply that Spirit Walker is the "enemy". Far from it - this man's passion for the school and the artwork, (whether forged or authentic) deserves my respect. I also enjoy his sense of style and design in developing his blog.
-
There is a feud of sorts underway between various parties with regard to what is a Morrisseau forgery and what isn't. Its a grand mystery. One that only a great trickster could dream up (guess who?). Spirit Walker's work was largely responsible for inciting the creation of the KRG blog (the "camp" where I first posted the statement above). He has galvanized the internet effort to clarify the breadth of the body of Morrisseau's art. He was the first with the energy and vision to give a voice to Morrisseau enthusiasts on the internet. Well done Spirit Walker! Good work.
-
As a webmaster I own the domain names Morrisseau.com and Morrisseau.ca. I used to own NorvalMorrisseau.com but I gave it to KRG (and in turn Gabe) for safekeeping, as it is Norval's personal name. Through an oversight KRG failed to renew it a couple of years later and Spirit Walker picked it up on the open market. Such trickery is the work of a certain Grand Shaman in the act of pleasuring himself (and ultimately us). Those who know Norval as the Grand Shaman must agree.
-
The Great Spirit is inclusive. We are brothers and sisters. Norval is a master magician and we are co-actors in a drama of extraordinary proportions.
-
Spirit Walker has a starring role. (you too Raven!)

NORVAL MORRISSEAU: BEST CANADIAN PAINTER EVER

I'm guessing that when the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Winter Olympics finally roll around in two years there's going to be lots of references to Aboriginal culture. Lots of dancing, drumming, native dress, references to aboriginal creation myths during the opening ceremonies; some elders will be brought in to bless the proceedings, that kind of thing. You can already see them using an Inuksuk (those Inuit 'rock piles') as one of their official icons. And as it should be. I have no problem with it, in fact I'm all for it. Like Australians we post-centennial, post-modern Canadians like to reach back to the deep time or the dream time when it comes time to show our face to the world. How real we are. The indigenous art. What inspired up and out from the land before the blight of colonialism. See, "we" are as ancient as everybody else. As old as Europe. I suppose its a kind of progress really, but a large dose of irony might still be necessary amidst all our mutual, terribly official self-congratulation.

Residential schools aside - check out Bill Reid on the twenty dollar bill. Bill Reid at the Vancouver airport. And my personal favourite, Bill Reid at the Canadian Embassy in Washington.

Many a Canadian white boy and girl has ventured forth into The Bush, however clumsily, trying to catch a whiff of the spirits. Going deep, getting back, oh yeah - getting real. Going back to the earth, because as the late, great Canadian poet Gwendolyn MacEwen once wrote: "No one invited us here."

But I wonder if any "Canadian" (and yes, in the context of this post I do feel the need to put that word in quotation marks) ever saw this 'real spirit' behind the surface of what we now call Canada better and more vibrantly than the recently, dearly departed Norval Morrisseau. His paintings were literally churning from the inside out. Skeletal and skeletons. Often called "x-ray". People within animals and animals within people and animals within animals within people covered in flowers riding on a fish, and all of it singing in the most glorious colour. And so out there and dangerous, freaky, hallucinogenic, tripping the bounds of sanity, and erotic. And inspired by sacred, ancient aboriginal myth.

"Why am I alive?"he said in a 1991 interview with The Toronto Star. "To heal you guys who are more screwed up than I am. How can I heal you? With color. These are the colors you dreamt about one night."

I've adored his work for years, before I ever knew his name or even knew who the heck he was. I bought my first Norval Morrisseau print a few years back at some poster sale in Hamilton and I remember riding the GO bus back into Toronto with the thing spread out on my lap for the whole trip, taking it in grinning ear to ear, just dazzled. And that was just a print. A poster. I tacked it to my kitchen wall and it made me happy every time I looked at it.

If anyone was the God Father of the Renaissance of Aboriginal Art and Culture that has ultimately made Canada a much humbler, more honest, better and yes more beautiful place, it had to be him. And at its heart the work was a profound movement for justice. That which cannot be denied.

Marc Chagall famously compared him to Picasso.

Keep your Group of Seven's, sure.

But Norval Morrisseau was the Best Canadian Painter Ever.

... was posted for sale at EMPIRE AUCTIONS in Toronto in 2003. I had called them to say that they were selling a fake Norval Morrisseau painting on their EMPIRE AUCTIONS in Montreal (click HERE) at approximately the same time as the painting presented in this post and they told me that they had received the painting from a "reliable source". In this example also there is no flow, composition and "power" of an authentic Norval Morrisseau painting. Also, the signature in Cree syllabics is writen incorrectly with the fifth syllabic in the shape of a number six (click on the image above to see detail of this discrepency). Shortly after these two paintings were exibited I have never seen Empire Auctions sell Norval Morrisseau's paintings again.

> The above presented image of an original Norval Morrisseau's painting was originally published on page 85 of THE ART OF NORVAL MORRISSEAU ('Jack Pollock's Book') /Lister Sinclair, Jack Pollock, and Norval Morrisseau/; ISBN: 0-458-93820-3 /Toronto, Ontario: Methuen, 1979./
-
>>> BLOG MASTER'S COMMENTS:

1) We can clearly see that both paintings "Untitled" (1968) and "The Serpent of Life" (1969) were painted/executed with identical composition. This confirms, more than once in the presentations on this blog, that Norval Morrisseau repeated many times his images.

This also undeniably proves that there is a connection between "Thunder Bay's Norval Morrisseau" and "Jack Pollock's Norval Morrisseau" paintings (click HERE to see both of these images side by side).

2) All of the paintings presented in "The Writing On The Wall... Norval Morrisseau Conspiracy Exposed" (click HERE) were also acquired directly from Mr. Rolf Schneider, Thunder Bay, Ontario.

3) The Thunder Bay Art Gallery holds among the other art pieces from the Helen E. Bend Collection had received in 2002 a donation of an oil painting on natural birch bark 'After Spirit of the Fourth' (Item: 02.3.1) > 24.8 cm x 26.2 cm > 1958 which was directly donated from Mr. Rolf Schnieder's Private Collection.

Also, Mr. Joseph Otavnik Family donated four paintings in 2004 to the same institution:

1) 'Untitled' [animal spirits facing inward] (Item: 04.7.1) > 73 cm x 56 cm > 1970; 2) 'Untitled' [two shaman and animal spirits in cameo] (Item: 04.7.2) > 72 cm x 85 cm > 1979; 3) Lake Trout with Eggs (Item: 04.7.3) > 114 cm x 80 cm > 1973 & 4) 'Untitled' [fish with minnows] (Item: 04.7.4) > 73 cm x 50 cm > 1976.

All of these paintings are declared authentic by Mr. Glenn Allison* who - Curator of The Thunder Bay Art Gallery.

* - Mr. Glenn Allison began his career as Research Curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery, working with Doris Shadboft from 1968-1972. His experience of more than thirty years includes management of the Bau-Xi Galleries on the west coast of Canada; Instructor of Art History for Columbia Junior College and Capilano College; instructor for the British Columbia Museums Association; instructor for the Association of Manitoba Museums; instructor for Brandon University, Manitoba; Director-Curator of the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, Brandon 1989-1999; Director Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery, Waterloo 2000-2003.

>>> ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Due to the fact that Mr. Rolf Schneider's and Mr. Gary Lamont's names have been mentioned several times on the internet in not very respectful way I decided to 'speak up' and defend their names and their involvment with issues in connection with authentic Norval Morrisseau's art pieces that came from their private collections at one time or another.

Mr. Gary Lamont a.k.a. Gary Bruce Thacky (Thunder Bay, Ontario) is an owner of the website www.woodlandartgallery.ca. He was a very close and very good friend of Norval Morrisseu who has always kept in high regard Norval Morrisseau from the very beginning of their relationship. Mr. Gary Lamont has a connection with the artist that goes back to the beginning of the 1980's and Norval Morrisseau was a family friend since the early 1960's (click HERE). All the paintings presented now and in the past on www.woodlandartgallery.ca are authentic pieces of art by Norval Morrisseau.

At the same time when I originally introduced Mr. Rolf Schneider I introduced individual that was selling paintings that originated from Mr. Schneider's and Mr. Lamont's collections - Mr. Anthony (Tony) Martinenko; art dealer from Winnipeg, Manitoba; who is an important element in describing many of the issues involving Norval Morrisseau's art that have been offered for sale all across Canada in the past decade. He took over art dealing activities from Alan (Al) R. Swanson (08/10/1947-11/05/1998) who dealt with paintings from Mr. Rolf Schneider's collection. Another individual introduced who sold many paintings that originated from the same source was Darcy Boylan (also deceased) from Thunder Bay, Ontario.

> Mr. Anthony Martinenko was also seen selling Norval Morrisseau's paintings on 'eBay' that he acquired directly from Mr. Schneider (click HERE). -

> Mr. Rolf Schneider acquired paintings for his collection from different sources one of which was Mr. David Voss who also supplied paintings for the Kahn Auction ('Randy Potter Estate Auctions') namely to Mr. Randy Potter (co-owner/auctioneer).-

> Mr. Schneider's collection was one of the major sources of Norval Morrisseau's paintings that were supplied to different galleries all across Canada by Mr. Anthony Martinenko who supplied paintings even to Coghlan Art Studio & Gallery, Aldergrove, BC for many years (click HERE, HERE & HERE).

> Among other galleries Mr. Anthony Martinenko was supplying Norval Morrisseau's paintings to Maslak McCleod Gallery, Toronto, Ontario and Bearclaw Gallery, Edmonton, Alberta.-

> Also, my first Norval Morrisseau's painting was purchased in Winter 1999-2000 from Mr. Anthony Martinenko who acquired it from Mr. Rolf Schneider (click HERE)!

About the project & Mission
-
Background

-
For all the original paintings and drawings, the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society (NMHS) has accepted the task (in 2005) to work on a catalogue raisonné, documenting every known work created by the artist. The large amount of - unrecorded - Norval Morrisseau’s originals will understandably lead to years of research and investigation by the NMHS.
-
Documenting the original signed limited edition silkscreens/serigraphs and lithographs are not part of their mission. Therefore this project will deal with all original signed limited editions, with the mission statement as written below.
-
If you own a Norval Morrisseau painting and would like to document it, contact the NMHS, contact the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society at
norvalmorrisseauheritage@gmail.com.
-
If you own a piece of a Norval Morrisseau limited edition, you can
contribute in this blog research project.
-
Mission Statement

-
This project has the mission to document all original signed limited editions of Norval Morrisseau. Norval Morrisseau Unlimited uses an on-line blog for the following reasons:
- to stimulate owners of a piece, to contribute with factual information;
- to support the art market as soon as possible, not out waiting the finalization of the project.
-
Contribute to the research!

-
If you have a limited edition of Norval Morrisseau, you can help to add factual information, which are still missing in the on-line Catalogue Raisonné. Search for the edition, in which you own a piece, in the “list (so far)”, look at the information and:
- confirm (or unconfirm) the written information (the more confirmations, the more reliable the information);
- send the unknown information.
-
Contribute by sending your information to
morrisseau.unlimited@gmail.com or by adding a comment (with the information) to a posting, by clicking on the posting title of your edition. It does not matter if a posting is old, you can always respond. See the on-line blog as a database, in which information will continuous be added.
-
Content

-
All information mentioned are factual registered by one ore more sources. For the codification of the sources and the reliability, see ‘codification’.
-
The limited editions will be numbered. For the codification of the numbering, see ‘
codification‘.
-
For the first year, after the launch of this project, regular there will be new posting of a known limited edition.
-
Blog master’s personal note
-
I am really fond of limited editions and I love the art of Norval Morrisseau. The combination is magical, to me. I discovered his art in the beginning of 2000 and it was the start of a special journey.

-
During these last 9 years I followed his art and collected almost scientifically al kind of information. This was not as easy as I expected for a well known and respected Canadian artist. However all my collected information of limited editions is the basis of this project “Catalogue Raisonné for the Limited Editions’.
-
I hope all owners will contribute to finalise this non-commercial project and that everyone will enjoy this site during the project.

-
Warm regards,

-

Letter to Sussanna McLeod Dated 1968 (letter 1.)
-
*Special note: Pay close attention to the fact that Norval Morrisseau does what is called ''print-writes'' as I coin this phrase. He prints written letters and does not attach them in a normal written script manner. This is a highly distinctive form of caligraphy. Also note the blending of upper and lower case letters throughout his correspondence in his letter to Sussanna McLeod (letter 1.). This mannerism and style is reflected in the painted signatures and titles of created artworks by Norval Morrisseau.

-
1. The letter N in Norval can be seen here written in the above three signatures on paper are normal N letters, but appears as two sevens 77 connected to each other when Morrisseau painted them on the back of a finished canvas as can be seen in our below examples of this letter N characteristic which runs consistently many times with his works. The N is always separated from the rest of the letters in his first name.

The first letter N in Norval can also be seen painted onto his canvases in a normal N style. The example below clarifies this fact in relation to Morrisseau's written words onto paper as well as the signatures in our four examples.

The painting of the letter N has the distinction of being painted with three separate strokes of the brush. This ''three stroke letter N'' can be noticed many times in the -print writing- of titles that Morrisseau placed onto special pieces. Sometimes he just painted the letter N normally without removing the brush off the canvas. In the many examples provided in this article of the full views of the reverse canvas one can see the N painted in the manner described above with 3 strokes of the brush.

The letters 'O-R-V' in Norval
-
2. The letters O-R and V in his first name NORVAL are always found seperated and Norval Morrisseau capitalizes his letter R. The capitilization of his letter R can be found three times in his entire signature painted on the reverse of his canvases and this correspondence can be found as well in his written signatures in our 4 examples. In letter 1. above it is clearly seen that Morrisseau wrote with a caligraphy that blended upper and lower case written printed letters. This characteristic is found many times in his paintings he chose to title and on the reverse side along with his signature and date of creation for the piece. Look carefully at the letter V and how the left stroke length of this letter is always shorter in length than the right stroke of the letter. This is typical of Norval Morrisseau's caligraphic style for writing this letter in his name.

-
*special note: -the letter -O- which is found two times in NOrval MOrrisseau's name were drawn on canvas and written on paper in a counter-clockwise fashion. Try to follow the brush stroke in our samples below to see how Morrisseau first touched the canvas with his brush and follow the swing of the letter in a counter-clockwise direction to it's completion to make the letter.

Note the separation of letters O-R and V in his written signature in letters 1. & 2. and the print signature provided in these examples below. All are showing a clear separation of the letters O-R and V in his first name n-O-R-V-al. The R's are always capitilized-upper case.

The letters 'AL' in Norval
-
3. The last two letters of Morrisseau's first name are -al- and these two letters are always written together and painted together in script form as can be seen in these examples below and in letters 1. & 2. and in our print signature example.

'M'-orrisseau
-
4. The letter 'M' in Norval Morrisseau's last name is written and painted rather flamboyantly. This letter is always painted and written separately and with one brush stroke as you trace and follow it's path to completion you see how Norval Morrisseau did this.

'O-R-R-i' in Morrisseau
-
5. The next four letters in Morrisseau's last name are 'O-R-R-i'. These four letters appear always separated as they are written and painted onto the backs of his canvases and on paper. Note the letter ''i'' and how it is dotted up and to the right of the letter bar's top end. The letter ''i'' is also done in a lowercase script manner and found separated. This is a characteristic of his caligraphic style and is seen many times in his written letters on paper and also reflected in his painted signature on the reverse of the canvases he created. You can see this easily in our written signature examples above.

middle 'S'

-
6. Let us examine the first middle letter S as it appears in Morrisseau's last name. Here we have a most remarkable similarity between the look of this letter and the second Cree syllabic letter that Norval Morrisseau paints onto the fronts of his creations! Did Morrisseau do this consciously or subconsciously? One can only speculate. The syllabics read ''Copper Thunderbird'' on the front of the canvas. The letter S here is always separated in his written signature and Morrisseau painted the letter this way as well. This can be clearly scene below in our image examples. The photograph of Morrisseau's second Cree syllabic was taken from our painting Titled ''Sacred Medicine Bear'' dated 1979.

'S-E-A-U' in Morrisseau

The S-E-A-U remaining letters are many times never painted completely. You will find an SEA, SAU, SEAU, SUE or an S followed by a scribbled like trailing of the brush to complete the last four letters with little legibility.
-
8. *special note - Norval Morrisseau almost always painted and wrote his first name Norval on top of Morrisseau.

-
-

The Date
-
9. Norval Morrisseau many times dated his creations. When he did date the pieces he finished,he would only indicate the last two years of the year. Painting it as such '77, '80, '75, '71... etc omitting the century indicator (19th century).

The copyright symbol
-
10. In addition to the two numbered date scheme Norval Morrisseau applied a copy right symbol ''C'' to his paintings and this was done in a counter-clockwise direction as it was brushed on to the canvas. By carefully following the position of the brush stroke one can easily assertain it's direction on the canvas.

Spelling Mistakes
-
11. Look for spelling mistakes in the titles that Norval Morrisseau painted onto the reverse of his pieces. The letter attached to this examination will suffice evidence to this fact that Morrisseau was not a great speller at times. Here are a couple of examples of this below.

Written signature on canvas/ball point pen
-
12. In our next example we are demonstrating a signed painting in Ball point pen on the reverse side of a canvas. Although it is not 100% clear one can still see the separation of the letters in Norval's first name up to the letter R and the -al- written as attached just like his written signature in our letter example. The double capitilization of the two letters -RR- are still pretty clear to read. The CREE sylabic S can be seen in the centre of Morri-S-seau's name with the written SEAU in script written form. Date of creation 1971 written as '71 with the copyright symbol in place.
