TEA WITH NORVAL
-
Saturday meant tea with Norval. What began as a casual drop-in soon hecame a weekly event. Our customers got to know that Saturday was Norval's day at our gallery. It was everyone's favorite day of the week.
-
Norval enjoys tea. He would sit back and savor his cups of tea, homemade cakes and cookies, sharing with us stories about his life and philosophies. He was a good storyteller and he had many to tell. We would gather around listening. Fascinated, time seemed to fly. I never tired of hearing the one about how he received his new name Copper Thunderbird.
-
Norval likes ceremony and ritual. Once, long before I knew him, he held a garden party at his home in Beardmore. He invited friends, journalists, and dignitaries, entertaining them in "royal style". Much has been written about his purchase of a complete sterling silver tea service and Royal Crown Derby cups and saucers.
-
Norval appreciates fine things. He likes to surround himself with works of art. We had a little ritual of our own. Each week he would want to buy himself a piece of art. His favorite purchase was Native beads, wearing five or six strands at once. He would sell me his art and I would sell him something from the gallery. This shopping exchange became part of our visit. He has good taste. My husband David's familiar comment was "Norval sure has a good eye. He always wants to buy our best piece of art!"
-
Norval is my friend. I feel so blessed to know him and I owe him so much.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: 'Lattimer Gallery' (formerly known as 'Leona Lattimer Gallery') was established in 1986 by Leona Lattimer and her husband, David. Having spent much of their adult lives travelling throughout British Columbia, Leona and David made strong personal and professional connections with many Northwest Coast Native artists. Leona and David continued to foster these relationships with the artists once they settled in Vancouver. Peter Lattimer, the grandson of Leona and David, took over the family business in 2001. It has been especially important to Peter that young First Nations artists within British Columbia are represented within the Northwest Coast Art market. Supporting emerging artists is a strong focus of Lattimer Gallery.
