>>> Norval Morrisseau was known to paint his canvases on top of other previously completed artworks as presented in this painting titled "Ritchie My Puppet" (1981). The other painting previously presented on this blog "Thunderbird" (1997) was also painted in the same manner using the same base image. Norval Morrisseau would do that if he would run out of canvases to paint on because he was the artist who never had an artistic creative block.
-
Also, he would do that if he didnt like a particular painting.
In Shamanistic arts this is known as a process of re-harmonizing (i.e. healing) and it is executed as per following:
-
• Paint a portrait of the subject in duality. (In this case Norval Morrisseau used floral design as a base image.)
-
• Secondly, paint over the dualisms with pure "White", producing a clean slate. (This means that beautiful face you slaved over now has to disappear!)
-
• Finally, repaint the White portions with peaceful serenity, using unified forms.
