"The Ojibways have great respect for the Bear. According to their legends, in the distant past the Bear had a human form and was in fact an ancestor of the Ojibways. Therefore he understands the Indian language and will never attack or fight any Indian if he is addressed properly."

Norval Morrisseau

Additional information: The largest clan of the Ojibway was the Bear (Makwa) Clan. The Bear Clan members were war chiefs and warriors were known for their thick black hair that never whitened even in old age. The Bear Clan members were the strong and steady police and legal guardians. The Bear Clan members spent a lot of time patrolling the land surrounding the village, and in so doing, they learned which roots, bark, and plants could be used for medicines to treat the ailments of their people.

Note: Norval Morrisseau was a member of the Bear Clan and a Grand Shaman of the Medicine Society which is traditionally guarded by four Medicine Bears. -
