For Immediate Release:

VADAS SUCCESSFULLY SUED IN MORRISSEAU CASE
-
Gabe Vadas* has recently pled no contest in a lawsuit brought against him for claiming the legal authority to speak to the legitimacy of Norval Morrisseau paintings offered at auctions. Vadas had previously written a letter to an auction house, challenging the authenticity of art pieces that were for auction, causing the withdrawal of said pieces. He was taken to court for these reasons. Vadas has instructed his lawyer to abandon their counter suit, to pay compensation as well as all legal expenses to the owner of the paintings. He has not requested that this withdrawal and admission of fault not be made public.

During pre-trial, it was reported that; Gabe Vadas has no legal authority over Norval Morrisseau's estate, Norval Morrisseau's unverified will has not been probated, and Gabe Vadas has no legal right to copyright any of Norval Morrisseau's work.

At the same time, the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society (NMHS) was made aware that listing their affiliations to various institutions left them, as well as their affiliated groups open to lawsuit. Not long after, all of the copyrights listed online that made claim to Morrisseau's work were removed, along with any mention of affiliation.

The Morrisseau family, after contesting their father's burial plans — made by Vadas without any consideration for the family, was successful in having Norval returned for burial in Keewaywin Reserve, beside his wife Harriet Kakegamic. Four of his blood children live on Keewaywin Reserve. Three are successful artists in their own right and exhibit throughout North America.

Gabe Vadas has not attempted to probate the unverified will of Norval Morrisseau. He has admitted that he has no power of attorney over Norval's estate. His lawyer states that he has no knowledge of the disc supposedly listing 'fakes' that Vadas says are not by Norval Morrisseau. The Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society has never appraised or stated authenticity for a single Norval Morrisseau art piece, nor has any Morrisseau painting ever been established as a fake in a Canadian court of law.

The Norval Morrisseau Family Foundation (consisting of the seven blood children of Norval Morrisseau) has warned Gabe Vadas, the stated 'principal gallery', the NMHS, and stated-law council that: they do not have permission to collect information, suggest legal authority, or publish any books dealing with the Norval Morrisseau art legacy. The family reserves that right for themselves, the Norval Morrisseau Family: Victoria, David, Eugene, Peter, Michael, Christian and Lisa.

Vadas, the principal gallery, the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society and stated-law council are directed to cease activity dealing with the legacy of Norval Morrisseau and cease claiming in public that they have that authority.

The Morrisseau family states clearly that Norval's legacy belongs to the family. Given Gabe Vadas' abandonment of his counter-suit and admission of fault, his authority regarding Morrisseau, as well that of his affiliates can be now called into question.
