He was called the "Picasso of the North." The great painter Norval Morrisseau, founder of the Woodlands school of aboriginal art, featured in exhibitions at the National Gallery and in Paris and New York, spent the last years of his extraordinary, sometimes troubled life in Nanaimo. In this daring theatrical vision of that life by Galiano Island playwright Marie Clements, Morrisseau is seen simultaneously as a boy, young man, and old man, as he journeys towards fame, disaster, and creative triumph. Copper Thunderbird is, like Morrisseau's canvases, a work of rich beauty and spirit.
