The above image is of the genuine Norval Morrisseau painting which was withdrawn from the auction ending today. The reason was that 'a couple of experts in Norval Morrisseau's art' questioned its authenticity? - as found out by the Blog Master in telephone conversation with Mr. Doug Levis - who undoubtetly expressed his trust in their 'expert opinions'? This painting was auctioned at "LEVIS Online Auctions" in Calgary, Alberta; See Lot #69 (Click HERE to go to page 4 or click HERE for this page's screen capture).
-
Provenance: This painting was originally acquired by Ugo Matulić a.k.a. Spirit Walker, Calgary, Alberta from private collection of Mr. Rolf Schneiders (file: #D117*) from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Who then traded it with Mr. Gary Lamont also from Thunder Bay, Ontario. This painting appeared on Mr. Lamont's www.woodlandartgallery.ca until it was sold to unknown buyer in 2008 (click HERE & HERE).

-
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Thunder Bay Art Gallery holds among the other art pieces from the Helen E. Bend Collection had received in 2002 a donation of an oil painting on natural birch bark 'After Spirit of the Fourth' (Item: 02.3.1) > 24.8 cm x 26.2 cm > 1958 which was directly donated from Mr. Rolf Schnieder's Private Collection. This paintings also happens to be the earlier artwork in Thunder Bay Art Gallery's collection painted by Norval Morrisseau.
-
Also, Mr. Joseph Otavnik Family donated four paintings in 2004 to the same institution:
-
1) 'Untitled' [animal spirits facing inward] (Item: 04.7.1) > 73 cm x 56 cm > 1970; 2) 'Untitled' [two shaman and animal spirits in cameo] (Item: 04.7.2) > 72 cm x 85 cm > 1979; 3) Lake Trout with Eggs (Item: 04.7.3) > 114 cm x 80 cm > 1973 & 4) 'Untitled' [fish with minnows] (Item: 04.7.4) > 73 cm x 50 cm > 1976.
-
All of these paintings are declared authentic by Mr. Glenn Allison who was a curator of The Thunder Bay Art Gallery.
-
BLOG MASTER'S COMMENT: I was very surprised that Mr. Doug Levis decided to withdraw this genuine Norval Morrisseau painting from Levis Online Auctions especially knowing that he had been confident in the past selling paintings which were executed in the same painting style Norval Morrisseau used in the decade of the 1970's (click HERE, HERE & HERE).

Also, see the above side-by-side comparison or click HERE (#11) & HERE (#21) to see how this painting compare with two paintings which were excluded from the "FAKE AND IMITATION" list of Norval Morrisseau's sworn affidavit signed on April 24th, 2003 (click HERE). These paintings were published in Maslak McLeod's "Norval Morrisseau: The Development of the Woodland School of Art".
-
Note: Two of the paintings previously auctioned and sold at Levis Online Auctions were purchased directly from the artist by Sedna Art Gallery, Banff, Alberta CANADA - GALLERY NOT IN OPERATION ANYMORE (gallery owner was Mr. Nick Lebessis who was also an owner of recently presented Northern Art Impressions from Lake Louise, Alberta) and they came from a prominent Saskatchewan/Alberta collection (click HERE for previously presented post clearly stating a provenance of the paintings in question).
