beautiful collage. I was wondering if that is a fingerprint on the middle piece on the bottom? it looks like one on the sylibis. I have seen his fingerprints on other originals and I was interested if he did this on a regular occurance? m.g.

First let me say wonderful collage SW! Those are great examples of Norval's work. M.G., we understand what you are trying to say, "syllabics" is what you meant. Herbert, you knwo full well what M.G. meant with Sylibis. I sure did. No problem at all M.G.
We get you! These paintings are only in question by dealers that don't want them to hit the market. If they scare enough people maybe they will all buy from them! A cheap way to contain the market! I ask Mr. Herbert to provide hard evidence that these examples are not REAL Morrisseau's. Not the fact that you say Norval denied them. But hard facts. Put up or shut up!
Keep up the good work SW! Great site!

Read the blog and you will get the arguements that have been put presented time after time that suggests that they are QUESTIONABLE. Since at this time no one can actually pinpoint who (whom) is painting them (or is not willing to make this statement) I think it is difficult to claim they are 100% FAKE. When you are reading the blog also focus on the fact that not one piece of evidence has been presented that ties one of these paintings to the artist with no questions asked. No evidence from the supporters, no ties to the artist, no evidence to support he painted them (pictures, etc etc..) leaves them as questionable paintings not authentic paintings. This is what they will remain until those that know more are willing to share what they know. And as Spirit Walker stated they are not willing to talk. Why?

This is not about anyone trying to corner the market to drive buyers to a certain gallery - either to the questionables or geniune...it is about getting to the bottom of this and the truth.

I do see the fingerprint that you are asking about. If it is the bottom middle painting you are asking about I think that may be part of the painting and ties in to the blue dots above.

My knowledge, and others will likely have more to add, is that there was an exhibit of paintings by Norval that the Morrisseau family put on in Thunder Bay in 2001 or 2002 that the family had Norval place a finger print on paintings they were selling. They also sold these paintings with a document signed by Norval stating it was authentic and the document too had a finger print on it. Early in this blog Spirit Walker has provided an example of a painting from this exhibit with a finger print on it. It is paintings from this Thunder Bay exhibition that have the finger print on them and I do not think that it is typical. Not to get the debate going and avoid your question but it is argued by some that a lot of these paintings are questionable even with the finger print and document. You can fing pictures of the large Morrisseau family sitting with Norval in wheel chair surrounded by many of these paintings with the finger print clearly shown on them.

If Norval put his fingerprint on these pieces and signed a document stating they were real, how can you question these works. Are you not questioning the integrity of Norval himself?m.g.

I would like to ask Spirit Walker if any of the pieces in the collage are signed on the back?m.g.

Christian Morrisseau himself admitted earlier in this blog that Norval would authenticate paintings that he did not do to make people happy and for the money. This is what makes it more difficult.

You will not get an answer to your question from Spirit Walker because he does not own these paintings and does not have access to the back of the them. My assumption is that they likely do have black signatures on the back. At least two of them have a signature on the back as Bryant Ross has deemed them fake as he owned/owns them. Another one shows up on the internet for sale by a Toronto gallery and it to is signed on the back.

T.C. would you be willing to take challenge from Spirit Walker for $100,000 that Bryant Ross’ paintings, he claimed fake, are authentic?

“Can you handle the Truth?”

If Spirit Walker is willing to put $100,000 on the table he should challenge Bryant Ross who owns two of these paintings. If Spririt Walker can present this information why hasn't he yet?

My comment above states they are questionable not fake. This is my opinion. I can not prove they are fake and have not claimed I can. My comment above mentions this as well - you would need to know who painted them to actually make the claim they are fake. I can claim they are QUESTIONABLE due to facts that have been presented here in this blog.

My mind is open but nothing has been shared to show differently other then silly comments like the one you made that has no information that is relevant.

SW was able to pick out a questionable Morrisseau earlier in this blog 11/13/2007 with Example of a Norval Morrisseau alleged to be Fake... Since the ThunderBay show by Christian and Eugene both of their paintings have been exhibited in galleries.

Have a look at the webstie

http://www.calligrammes.com/thumbnails_e.php?artist=105&view_profile=1#

for examples Eugene's work and compare it to the piece that SW alleged as fake with Norval's signature on it. The auction house admits that Eugene 'assisted' with this painting.

Christians paintings can easily be found on the internet as well.

Correction:

TC makes a good point. I should not use the term fake because it implies I knwo who did them. Of questionable origin is a better term.

Victor - you did claim that Christian and Eugene painted the ones from the Thunder Bay 2002 Exhibit (see blog posting 11/15/2007). That would mean you are confident they are fake?

So many of NM's paintings never touched a gallery or dealer. Many authentic paintings will be challenged in the coming years - that is puzzle that the ever-prolific NM left us. Unfortunately, proxies such as Richie S. have been used to deem authentic paintings as fakes as part of an ugly campaign. Shame on you out there.
